Embrace the Glow

Learning to accept compliments can be a powerful tool for building self-esteem, building healthy and positive relationships, and stepping into your power.

Compliments are more than just words; they serve as expressions of appreciation and acknowledgment. Learning to accept compliments graciously is crucial for several reasons:

  • Boosts Self-Esteem - Accepting compliments can contribute to a healthy sense of self-worth. When we acknowledge our accomplishments and accept praise, it reinforces positive feelings about ourselves.

  • Strengthens Relationships - Taking compliments graciously helps build stronger connections with others. When we acknowledge and appreciate the positive qualities in ourselves, we become more open to connecting with others on a deeper level.

  • Encourages a Positive Mindset - Accepting compliments can shift our mindset from self-doubt to a more positive outlook. Embracing positive feedback can motivate us to set and achieve new goals.

Despite the benefits, many people find it difficult to take compliments. Common challenges include:

  • Modesty Culture - Societal norms often encourage women to shrink, making it uncomfortable for women to openly accept compliments without feeling like they are bragging.

  • Imposter Syndrome - Those experiencing imposter syndrome may believe they don't deserve praise and may struggle to accept compliments genuinely.

  • Fear of Vulnerability - Accepting compliments requires vulnerability, as it involves acknowledging one's strengths. Fear of appearing arrogant or being vulnerable can hinder the ability to accept praise.

Tips for Taking Compliments:

  • Pause and Acknowledge - When receiving a compliment, take a moment to pause and acknowledge the words. Instead of deflecting or dismissing, say a simple "thank you" or "thank you, I really appreciate your kind words of praise" or "thank you, you encourage me to keep aiming high" or "thank you, it's really nice to be recognized for my efforts."

  • Internalize the Positivity - Allow yourself to internalize the positive words. READ THAT AGAIN!!! Reflect on the compliment and recognize the effort and skill that led to the acknowledgment.

  • Avoid Deflection - Resist the urge to downplay your achievements or shift the focus elsewhere. I remember the first time I realized I deflected most of my compliments. Now I pause, take a deep breath, and practice one of my "thank you" options.

  • Practice Self-Compliments - Practice self-love by acknowledging your achievements to yourself. Try this one in the mirror, it can even be small like "thank you for making healthy eating options today." This will make it easier to accept compliments in addition to a healthy habit of reinforcing your intentional efforts.

Taking compliments is an art that requires practice and self-reflection. By recognizing the importance of acknowledging our strengths and gracefully accepting praise, we can boost our self-esteem, strengthen relationships, and cultivate a more positive mindset. So, the next time someone offers a compliment, embrace the glow, say "thank you," and allow yourself to bask in the positivity. After all, learning to take compliments is not about arrogance but about recognizing and appreciating the unique qualities that make you, YOU.
